SUMMARY
The primary concern with rubella infection is when a pregnant woman contracts it for the first time during the first three months of her pregnancy. The developing fetus is the most vulnerable to the virus at this time and if it is passed on to the fetus by the mother, it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and/or congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), a group of serious birth defects that will permanently affect the child. CRS can cause delayed development, mental retardation, deafness, cataracts, an abnormally small head, liver problems, and heart defects.
Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a parasite found in undercooked meat from an infected animal, exposure to cat feces (where the parasite egg is frequently found), or from soil (such as gardening soil) contaminated by the parasite. A woman who becomes infected during pregnancy may develop swollen lymph nodes, fatigue and flu-like symptoms. Fetuses infected during early gestation are more adversely affected than if exposed later in the pregnancy. Newborns infected with toxoplasmosis may appear normal at birth, but, as the baby becomes older, may develop vision or hearing loss, display learning disabilities, mental retardation, or seizures. Severe cases may result in death.
The EUGENE® TORCH IgG 5-in-1 Rapid Test is a lateral flow chromatographic immunoassay, which is designed to get qualitative testing result for four the infectious diseases within 5 to 10 minutes without help of any extra equipment.
